In this exclusive interview, we delve into the exciting world of the MA Performance Design course at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. We chat with Bronia Housman about what makes this program unique, the skills she looks for in applicants, and the rewarding journey that awaits aspiring Performance Designers.

What makes your course stand out from other similar programs?

The integration of the course with the other courses at the school – and the practical, collaborative work that the students get to do in a well-supported atmosphere is a really unique and very ‘Bristol’ approach to the training and excellent outcomes our students get.

What kind of student thrives on your course?

“Students that thrive on this course are those that are creative, self-motivated and that are interested in spending a year honing their design skills.”

What are the top 3 skills or qualities you look for in applicants?

“The top three skills we’re looking for are – Brilliant visual storytellers / Excellent problem-solvers / Great collaborators and communicators.

What are the career pathways available to graduates of your course?

“People graduating from the MA Performance Design go off in to the world in a wide variety of directions. Set and costume design for theatre, film and TV. Event design, various roles on film and TV projects – from art department to costume. But the core skills that we learn and practice on the course are really transferable and provide the perfect foundation and a strong catalyst to start a successful career in the sector.”

What is the most rewarding part of your role as Head of Course?

“The most rewarding part of my job is seeing my wonderful students develop their skills over the course and become confident deisgners with their own unique voice.”

What is the most exciting thing about studying your subject at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School?

“This course is run in such a practical way, it is not just thinking about and imagining design. It is about learning through doing and that is so compelling and critical to students future success and ultimately the most exciting thing.”

What advice would you give to prospective students considering applying to your course?

“We love to train designers with a range of backgrounds – art, illustration, architecture, fashion, interior design, product design, or other theatre backgrounds. If you are worried that your experience isn’t right, or theatre centric enough – I would advise you to just go for it. Or get in touch and ask the question first, before discounting this amazing course!”

What is the most important thing you want prospective students to know about your course?

“The most important thing to say – we’re not looking for fully formed / oven ready designers. We’re looking for people who have the potential and can come and train and learn and develop with us – developing their own unique ‘design voice’ along the way!”
