In this exclusive interview, we delve into the exciting world of the MFA Professional Acting course at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. We chat with Georgina Sowerby about what makes this program unique, the skills she looks for in applicants, and the rewarding journey that awaits aspiring actors.
What are the most exciting things happening on your course right now?
“Right now, we’re deeply immersed in a company production of Chekhov’s Three Sisters, reimagined with a contemporary edge by Benedict Andrews. It’s a thrilling blend of emotional depth, iconic characters, and a touch of the unexpected – think David Bowie! Alongside this, we’re witnessing incredible breakthroughs in our students’ vocal expression and emotional connection. And, contrary to popular belief, our introduction to ‘Clown’ is proving to be a powerful tool for fearless honesty and vulnerability.”
What makes your course stand out from other similar programs?
“We offer a truly intimate learning environment with small class sizes and personalized attention. Our unique summer term provides an extended period of dedicated study. Furthermore, our close collaboration with the school’s writers, directors, and designers fosters a vibrant and supportive creative hub. And let’s not forget the incredible energy of Bristol itself – a city brimming with artistic inspiration and a fantastic cultural scene, all without the overwhelming pace of London.”
What kind of student thrives on your course?
“We seek individuals who are inherently creative, courageous, and endlessly curious. Students who are passionate about exploring both classical and contemporary approaches to acting. Those who are eager to embark on a profound personal and artistic journey alongside their peers. Perhaps you’ve already explored other paths in life, but the desire to pursue acting remains a driving force within you.”
What are the top 3 skills or qualities you look for in applicants?
“At the core, we value passionate engagement – with both the craft of acting and with oneself. Open-mindedness is crucial, both towards the work itself and towards the diverse perspectives of fellow actors. Finally, we seek individuals who possess a childlike sense of wonder and excitement – the ability to be truly captivated by a powerful story, a moving piece of music, or a breathtaking work of art. Ultimately, it all boils down to generosity – a willingness to share, to learn, and to grow together.”
What are the career pathways available to graduates of your course?
“Our culminating Industry Showcase provides a platform for graduates to connect with casting directors, agents, and industry professionals. However, career paths extend far beyond this. Throughout the year, students collaborate with professional directors on developmental projects, fostering valuable industry connections. Many graduates also pursue their creative endeavours, forming their own theatre companies with fellow alumni. The possibilities are truly limitless.”
What is the most rewarding part of your role as Head of Course?
“Witnessing a student’s acting breakthrough, watching them expand their expressive potential, is incredibly rewarding. I often think my official title should be ‘Acting Doula’! I also deeply cherish the opportunity to immerse myself in the world of theatre, both classic and contemporary, and to guide our students in creating imaginative and impactful productions.”
What advice would you give to prospective students considering applying to your course?
“Reflect deeply on the speeches that resonate with you most – what is it about these pieces that move you? Consider your motivations for dedicating a year to intensive acting training. We want to understand your unique journey and what brings you to this program. And most importantly, be yourself – we are genuinely interested in getting to know the authentic you.”
What is the most exciting thing about studying your subject at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School?
“The opportunity to learn from exceptional teachers and directors, to thrive in a vibrant and supportive artistic community, and to cultivate your passion alongside talented and like-minded individuals. The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School provides a truly unique and enriching environment for artistic growth and development.”
What is the most important thing you want prospective students to know about your course?
“We can equip you with the technical skills and in-depth knowledge necessary for a successful acting career. However, your unique talent, your generosity of spirit, and your unwavering dedication are essential ingredients you must bring to the table.”
