Overview

This practical, hands-on course explores the diverse and imaginative world of prop making and sculpture. Across 4 intensive days, you’ll gain an insight into professional prop-making processes used in theatre, film, and art production industries, while developing your own creative ideas into finished pieces.

Under the guidance of experienced tutors, you’ll learn a range of techniques including sculpture, mould making, casting, mask making, fake food creation, scenic painting, sewing, upholstery, and basic woodwork. The course is designed to be flexible, allowing you to focus on specific skills or materials that interest you most.

You’ll leave with 1–3 original props to take home, ideal for building a portfolio, developing specialist making skills, or simply exploring prop making as a new creative hobby.

Specialist Interests

Depending on your interests, you will have the opportunity to explore:

  • Sculpture for prop making – clay sculpting, poly carving, clay reliefs, working to scale
  • Mould making and casting – using silicone, plaster, and fast-cast materials
  • Finishing techniques – sanding, cleaning, and scenic paint finishes
  • Mask making – including an introduction to thermoplastics
  • Fake food – processes and decorative surface techniques
  • Pattern making and cutting – working with foam and Plastazote for costume props
  • Laser cutting practice
  • Basic sewing and upholstery  – for soft furnishings and fabric props

Highlights

The course combines structured masterclasses with opportunities for independent project work. Key areas include:

  • Masterclasses in theatrical prop-making, materials, and sculpture
  • Health & Safety and workshop procedure training, including PPE use
  • Teacher-led demonstrations across multiple techniques
  • Student-led projects with one-to-one tutor support

    There will be a maximum of 10 participants on this course.
  • What do I need to wear or bring

    All core materials and tools will be provided. You may wish to bring personal reference images or design ideas to support your projects.

    Please bring:

    • A sketchbook and pencils for notes and designs
    • A camera or smartphone to document your work

    Wear:

    • Closed-toe shoes (no sandals or open footwear)
    • Old clothing or overalls suitable for workshop activity

    All required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided and must be worn as instructed.

    We will make all reasonable efforts to deliver a short course as outlined on our site and in any brochure or published material. However, we reserve the right to cancel a short course in case of events outside our control or if the course fails to meet a minimum number of participants. In the event that we cancel a course, we will inform participants who have booked a place via email at least 7 days prior to the start date. We will also provide a full refund of the course fee paid. Bristol Old Vic Theatre School cannot be held responsible for any expenses you incur due to such a cancellation.
