Hywel Edwards-Sim

MA Drama Writing Student

Biography

Hywel is a writer and dramaturg from Barry, South Wales. Inspired by the likes of Alistair McDowall, Alice Birch and Robert Holman, his work interrogates the emotional complexities of human relationships against larger concepts, frequently within the genres of horror, fantasy, and science fiction.

Hywel began writing plays whilst studying English and Theatre at the University of Warwick, among them an adaptation of King Lear, a poetic reassessment of the life of Anne Boleyn, and a futuristic piece about his ancestral home of Port Talbot. At BOVTS, he has sought to hone specific elements of his writing craft, whilst branching out into other dramatic mediums; his TV pilot for an adult-aimed animation following a group of entrepreneurial space goblins being a particular highlight.

Hywel’s script development work at the School has fostered a keen interest in dramaturgy and the architecture of drama, which he intends to pursue more extensively in his future career. He is further fascinated by how writing intersects with other industries, such as tourism and education, completing a research project on the dramaturgy of immersive attractions in his third term.

One of my favourite parts about BOVTS is that it feels ‘homegrown’. From the set to the costume, lighting, acting and sound, every single aspect of a theatre production or film is down to the students. The location of Clifton is so serene and the School being so small everyone knows each other and it feels so personal and special. Violet Morris, BA Professional Acting Student
