We met with the Head of Voice and the MFA Professional Voice Studies course at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, to find out more about the course, the ideal student and the opportunities for graduating participants.

What makes your course stand out from other similar programs?

This course only takes a very small number of students, which means you get a huge amount of individual attention compared to similar courses. You become part of an MA hub, with writers, directors, designers and actors. You all work collaboratively throughout the year, culminating in a number of student-led productions. You’re ready for this because the course is practical and hands-on – delivering tutorials and production work from the end of your first term. All of this means you finish the course industry ready.

What kind of student thrives on your course?

Performers from a wide range of backgrounds, speech and language therapists with a knowledge of singing and acting. Really anyone with those kinds of backgrounds and experience.

What are the top 3 skills or qualities you look for in applicants?

  1. A desire to grow
  2. Excellent listening and communicating skills
  3. The ability to handle assimilating new knowledge in a short amount of time.

What are the career pathways available to graduates of your course?

There are numerous career pathways for people graduating this course. From teaching voice and dialect in a theatre school setting, or working freelance in the Theatre, TV and Film sector, or coaching non-actors/performers in all walks of professional and personal life.

What is the most rewarding part of your role as Head of Course?

Sharing my knowledge and experience from 40 years working as a speech and language therapist and a voice teacher and continuing to learn from every student I teach.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering applying for this course?

Talk to one of our alumni or me to see if what we offer is right for you…. and then apply.

What is the most exciting thing about studying your subject at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School?

Being part of a small, warm-hearted and very generous community of people, who all want to find out what they’re made of and are working really hard together to that end!

What is the most important thing you want prospective students to know about your course?

You need to be prepared to work hard at new stuff and be prepared to be challenged!

  • If you’re interested in becoming a Voice and Dialect Coach and working in this exciting and rapidly growing segment of the Arts and Business sector.
  • If you’re interested in film, Theatre or TV.
  • If you have a desire to learn, grow and develop your own practice.

Then the MFA Professional Voice Studies course at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School could be the perfect course for you.

Apply before 28th February 2025 for Sept 2025 entry.

It was always stressed that the contacts you make during your training are incredibly important, and your classmates are likely to end up being on set alongside you in the future. After working with a director of photography on one of the School’s short films, I was invited to work on a project with him outside of Bristol - proving that the professionals we meet via the School, may one day give us a call to action!
