Overview

The intensive, 3-day Introduction to Prop Making course has been designed as a practical exploration of different techniques to create larger-than-life props. The workshop will cover essential skills like carpentry, laser cutting, sculpting, casting and mould-making. Learning will take place in a supportive, hands-on environment where you learn the art of prop making from experienced professionals.

Bristol Old Vic Theatre School offers a fun and nurturing environment in which to pursue your creative ambitions. The support and feedback available from your tutor will help you develop your talent and confidence to create your own props.

Highlights

• Learn how to use hand tools and workshop machines, and construct a stool using mortise and tenon joints;

• Sculpt an animal in clay, create a one-part mould in plaster, and reproduce the sculpt in latex;

• Work at scale to create larger than life food props – create a sculpt, learn how to use silicone to cast the sculpt and reproduce the object with tinted fast cast resins.

This is a full-time, three-day course, running from 10:00 to 16:00. This course is taught in our workshops at Downside Road.

It was always stressed that the contacts you make during your training are incredibly important, and your classmates are likely to end up being on set alongside you in the future. After working with a director of photography on one of the School’s short films, I was invited to work on a project with him outside of Bristol - proving that the professionals we meet via the School, may one day give us a call to action!
