Lois Vohra

MA Drama Writing Student

Biography

Lois is a Bristol-based writer originally from Sheffield. Her interest in writing for the stage was sparked in 2021 when she began studying Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Bristol. In 2022, she started writing and producing work with the University of Bristol’s new writing society, Spotlights. She worked on their committee as Welfare Officer and later staged her first play with them.

Her debut show A Park Hill Romance opened at the Pegg Studio in 2023 and she went on to adapt it into a radio play during her time at BOVTS. In late 2024, Lois was shortlisted for the Bristol Old Vic Early Career Writers Group. Since starting her training at BOVTS, Lois has been experimenting with using postdramatic theatre techniques in her work and writing from her lived experience as a neurodivergent woman of colour.

She has also utilised the course to develop her experience as a stand up comedian into the ability to write comedy for the screen and stage. Lois has a particular fondness for writing about her home city of Sheffield and her work is often inspired by the community in which she was raised.

It was always stressed that the contacts you make during your training are incredibly important, and your classmates are likely to end up being on set alongside you in the future. After working with a director of photography on one of the School’s short films, I was invited to work on a project with him outside of Bristol - proving that the professionals we meet via the School, may one day give us a call to action!
