Class of 1982
Widely regarded as one of the most influential Shakespeareans of his generation, Sir Gregory Doran is a cornerstone of the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School’s (BOVTS) legacy. Since graduating from our Professional Acting program in 1982, Gregory has charted an extraordinary course through the British landscape, culminating in a decade-long tenure as the Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).
Gregory’s journey into the heart of British drama began in the West Country. Before honing his craft within the intensive conservatory environment of BOVTS, he read English and Drama at the University of Bristol. This dual heritage—combining the academic rigor of the University with the practical, world-class training of the Theatre School—laid the foundation for a career defined by intellectual depth and theatrical flair.
After a successful start as an actor, Gregory pivoted to directing, joining the RSC as an Assistant Director in 1987. His rise was meteoric, and he quickly became known for his “lucid, accessible, and deeply human” stagings of the Bard’s works.
– Artistic Leadership: Served as Artistic Director of the RSC from 2012 to 2022, overseeing a transformative era for the company.
– The “Greatest Living Shakespearean”: Described by the Sunday Times as one of the finest directors of our era, Gregory has directed every single play in the First Folio.
– Landmark Productions: His 2008 Hamlet starring David Tennant and Patrick Stewart became a cultural phenomenon, later adapted for BBC television.
– Knighthood: In 2024, Gregory was awarded a Knighthood for services to the Arts, a testament to his lifelong commitment to the theatre.
Despite his international acclaim, Sir Gregory remains a proud and active member of our alumni community. He frequently credits his time at BOVTS for providing the “technical toolkit” necessary to navigate the complexities of classical text.
Today, Gregory continues to inspire the next generation of BOVTS students, embodying the excellence, passion, and artistic integrity that the School strives to instill in every graduate. We are honored to count him among our most distinguished alumni.
