A Christmas Carol – Bristol Old Vic Theatre School by Sarah Rowlands (UWE MA Journalism Student)

What’s Christmas without Dickens?
Bristol Old Vic Theatre School’s energetic production of A Christmas Carol breathes new life into this classic tale of redemption at Christmas time.
Ebenezer Scrooge must learn the responsibility we all have to help one another, to rid himself of the chains he will bear, forged from a life of self-service and greed…
Full of life and laughter, the production’s inventive staging and captivating use of sound delighted audiences for an afternoon of festive family fun.
Nathanial Abdo’s Ebeneezer Scrooge begins the play as a sneering, slimy business man tricking and scheming the poor and most destitute as he loans them money with eyewatering interest rates. Abdo’s portrayal echoed that of Jim Carey’s, comedic and eccentric in his physicality and yet tender and earnest in his moments of reflection.
The ensemble whirled around the Redgrave stage bringing Dickensian London to life. The show’s inventive use of props and puppets was wonderfully unique. Through window panes, glowing lanterns and flurries of snowflakes this immersive production captured audience’s imaginations all the way through. The audience really felt like part of the action as we were taken along on Scrooge’s journey to redemption.
The Ghost of Christmas present, played by Tobi Grace, a sassy, eccentric interpretation of the jolly giant brought so much joy to the show!
This production would be great for students studying the Charles Dickens novel with much of the original text woven into the script.
A festive treat for the whole family, as Scrooge is unravelled by love audiences are reminded what’s really important this festive season!
