Alice’s Jungle Book gets a Green Book Makeover

MA Performance Design graduate Alice Sales (2023) is applying innovative sustainable practices to her latest design project for Haberdashers’ Monmouth School. This March, the independent school will present its production of The Jungle Book – and designer Alice is incorporating green book principles for sustainable theatre into her costume designs. Working closely with the students, the costumes for the five main characters will be sourced from entirely sustainable materials.

We caught up with Alice to find out how her training at the Theatre School helped prepare her for the industry. She commented: β€œMy time at BOVTS gave me an amazing set of skills to take into the industry. The opportunity to design for both large scale ensemble productions and small fringe shows gave me real hands-on experience, and the encouragement to design to Green Book principles has stayed with me throughout my practice.

Alice continued, β€œKatie Rowsell – Head of Drama at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School – is a fellow BOVTS graduate (MA Drama Directing β€˜14), which just shows that the School fosters an amazing community which lasts well beyond graduation!”

Want to follow in Alice’s footsteps? Our MA Performance Design programme is now accepting applications for entry in September 2025. Learn more at oldvic.ac.uk/degree-courses.

The School is in a beautiful part of Bristol, overlooking a huge park called the Downs. We sometimes take advantage of our close proximity to the Downs during the summer term, practising fight and dance routines, or voice or singing classes! Dan Hall, BA Professional Acting student
