The Viewpoints and Composition Masterclass is designed for actors, directors, dancers and performers of all disciplines to build fundamental knowledge of the Viewpoints practice and engage in the Composition process. The content of this course is rooted in the ground-breaking work of Mary Overlie and will guide participants through a practical, embodied exploration of the six integral elements of onstage performance: Space, Shape, Time, Emotion, Movement and Story. This intensive Masterclass will help you enhance your physical expression, onstage presence, group work skills and overall creative practice.
Bristol Old Vic Theatre School offers a fun and nurturing environment in which to pursue your creative ambitions. The support and feedback available from your tutor will help you develop your natural talents and confidence in performance.
> Understand the fundamental principles of Viewpoints practise and explore how it can enhance your physical articulation and onstage presence;
> Participate in practical exercises which heighten your ability to respond to the present moment with greater sensitivity, authenticity and versatility;
> Engage in compositional tasks to understand how to Viewpoints practise can be used as a tool for creating original work;
> Learn how to use Viewpoints practise to build an ensemble and create group work quickly and intuitively;
> Be part of a collaborative learning environment with fellow artists where you can share thoughts and enhance your understanding of Viewpoints and Composition.
This is a full-time, one day Masterclass. Sessions run from 9.30 am to 5.00 pm. This course is taught in our rehearsal studios at Downside Road.
Chris Williams is a director, writer, actor and movement practitioner based in Bristol. He has worked and trained with acclaimed ensembles in the UK and internationally, including SITI Company, Gecko, the Suzuki Company of Toga and the Pappy Show. As an actor he has performed at the National Theatre, Bristol Old Vic, Garrick Theatre (West End), Soho Theatre, Tobacco Factory and Lyric Hammersmith Studio. An alumnus of BOVTS, Chris also trained with the National Youth Theatre Rep Company and at the Oxford School of Drama. He now works as a visiting practitioner for BOVTS and the Bristol School of Acting, and facilitates regular training for theatre artists in the city. He also writes, directs and devises as part of the newly established experimental ensemble Bristol International Theatre Workshop.
Is This Course For Me?
This course is an introduction to Viewpoints & Composition. The session will be movement based, though no prior movement experience is necessary. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or total novice, this masterclass is tailored to artists at all stages of their journeys. All you require is an open mind and a willingness to explore.
You will need to bring food and drink to sustain yourself through the day. Please be aware that there is no food available on site except a vending machine. Shops can be found approximately 8 minute walk from the school on Whiteladies Road.
