Considering postgraduate training at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School? You might have heard various myths about what it takes to get into drama school or what the experience entails. At BOVTS, we believe in transparency and accessibility – so let’s separate fact from fiction. Here are six common myths about drama school training and why they shouldn’t stand in your way.
Myth 1: You need to have a previous degree to obtain a Master’s
Postgraduate training is suitable for those who have already completed an undergraduate degree or have substantial relevant experience. That’s right – you don’t necessarily need an undergraduate degree, if you have evidence of your experience!
Each individual’s unique experience is considered as part of the application process, and the specific relevant experience will vary from course to course. We encourage you to visit the Course Finder for detailed requirements for each programme.
Myth 2: Aspiring actors require lots of experience to apply
Not true! Drama school is where you learn and develop your skills – regardless of your starting point. We’re proud to have fostered a safe and encouraging environment in which our students can experiment, explore and even make mistakes. It’s all part of the process! We’re looking for passion, potential and a willingness to learn – rather than an extensive performance portfolio.
Myth 3: Drama school is only for actors
Think again. We have a portfolio of postgraduate courses for aspiring directors, writers, voice and dialect coaches, and designers – as well as two distinct acting courses for performers. You will also collaborate and socialise with our current undergraduate students who are training in a range of off-stage disciplines: lighting and sound design, prop and costume making, stage management, construction… The list goes on!
Myth 4: Postgraduate ‘study’ is purely academic and theoretical
Not us, our postgraduate courses are highly practical. You’ll learn by doing, collaborating and – most importantly – creating! You’ll also be immersed into Bristol’s artistic eco-system. More on that next…
Myth 5: You have to live in London to succeed in the arts
Think outside the box! Bristol has a thriving arts scene and our drama school is well-connected with organisations and venues across the city. Our students have the opportunity to work within established arts spaces and benefit from visiting practitioners who have bags of industry experience.
It’s not just about the theatre, either. By leveraging Bristol’s status as a UNESCO City of Film, we ensure that our students are well-prepared for the diverse opportunities available in the screen industries.
Myth 6: You have to be a certain ‘type’ to get into drama school
Nonsense. At Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, we celebrate individuality and diversity. We encourage applications from all backgrounds and communities! The School’s Student Support team can support you in accessing learning and support resources, including counsellors and city-wide services. We’re also fortunate to have a variety of student-led groups, including a Student Union, a Cultural Union led by students of colour, and an LGBTQ+ Society.
