6th May 2025
On Friday 2nd May we were fortunate enough to have a visit from Acting alumnus Curzon Dobell (Acting ’80).
Curzon (originally from Canada) was visiting Bristol, from his home in Brooklyn NYC, for the first time in many years and it was his first trip back inside the School building since he graduated in 1980.
He was kind enough to spend an hour with some of our current Acting students from the MA Screen Acting, MFA Professional Acting and all three years of the BA (Hons) Professional Acting courses.
During this lunch-time session Curzon shared anecdotes and stories from his 4+ decades working in the theatre, film and TV industry. He told students about his experiences on set with some of the world’s most respected directors, but the biggest gasp from the students listening was when he revealed his part in world-renowned video game series ‘Red Dead Redemption.’
Curzon shared the inside scoop on what life was like as a voice and movement artists on a major video game series like Red Dead Redemption, where he plays one of the lead roles of Hosea. He discussed how some of the sideline opportunities that come along with this half-decade role – including the many fan events around the world can be as lucrative, if not more than the original gig itself.
It’s easy to see Curzon’s resemblance to his ‘Hosea’ gaming alter-ego when they’re placed side by side:
We really love having visits like this one at the School and welcoming alumni back in to Downside Road is always a special moment. Students hearing first hand from professionals still carving their path in the industry is priceless, especially when it is interlaced with fond memories shared from their own time at the School.
If you’re an alumni of Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, a professional in the Theatre, TV and Film sectors, and would like to arrange a visit to Downside road and to meet with students currently training – then we would love to hear from you. Get in touch via the [email protected] mailbox.
Thanks again Curzon and we’re now all looking forward to a visit from Netflix’s Heartstopper star Rhea Norwood (BA Acting ’23), who only graduated from the school a few short years ago. Watch this space….
