Bristol Old Vic Theatre School is thrilled to announce that Spike Maxwell (BA Professional Acting ’25) has been awarded a bursary from the Sir John Gielgud Charitable Trust. The bursary will help to alleviate financial pressures as Spike enters their third year of training at BOVTS.

Spike commented: “I feel very grateful to be the recipient of the Sir John Gielgud Charitable Trust bursary. The financial support will allow me to focus on my training and wellbeing. Thank you to the trustees for selecting me. I am elated!”

Spike has recently completed a week of training with Emma Rice’s theatre company, Wise Children. Each summer, the company invites second-year acting students to participate in a Drama School Residency, allowing Wise Children an opportunity to “encourage and inspire talented young professionals on the brink of joining the industry”.

As the summer break continues, Spike will be making their way to the Edinburgh Fringe 2024 to perform in The Emu War, a new musical comedy written by fellow BA Professional Acting student Lotte Pearl, directed by MA Drama Writing ’24 graduate Jessie Millson and choreographed by Spike. Following the antics of The Great Emu War of 1932, you can catch Spike – along with BOVTS graduates and current students – at Pleasance Courtyard (Pleasance 2) throughout August.

Reflecting on their recent experiences, Spike added: “I’m feeling so grateful for these opportunities that have come to me in the past month. It’s been one of the most rewarding experiences.”

Congratulations Spike!

One of my favourite parts about BOVTS is that it feels ‘homegrown’. From the set to the costume, lighting, acting and sound, every single aspect of a theatre production or film is down to the students. The location of Clifton is so serene and the School being so small everyone knows each other and it feels so personal and special. Violet Morris, BA Professional Acting Student
