Biography

Emma Callander is an award-winning theatre director and dramaturg. She has directed productions and trained actors and directors for Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Emma originally trained as an actor at the Central School of Speech and Drama and won the Carleton Hobbs Award on graduation. Since then Emma has directed over 20 productions and held the role of Associate Director at the Traverse Theatre. Her work has won 2 Fringe First Awards, the Herald Angel Award and the Amnesty International Freedom of Speech Award.

Emma has been the Artistic Director of political new writing company Theatre Uncut since 2012, directing the company’s work across the UK including the Young Vic, Traverse Theatre, Soho Theatre and Bristol Old Vic. The company has won numerous awards and received a nomination for the Olivier Awards.

Emma was born and raised in Bristol and is delighted to be working at this legendary institution in her hometown.

One of my favourite parts about BOVTS is that it feels ‘homegrown’. From the set to the costume, lighting, acting and sound, every single aspect of a theatre production or film is down to the students. The location of Clifton is so serene and the School being so small everyone knows each other and it feels so personal and special. Violet Morris, BA Professional Acting Student
