Abby is a writer and director from Manchester, passionate about creating engaging, lyrically intimate, character-driven work. She uses humour and humanity to bring distant or elusive figures into an immediate, empathetic focus. Her work focuses on the female experience and the psychological drama of unspoken feeling.
Her previous work has often explored unearthed untold historical narratives. This includes La Bella, which examines the relationship behind the paintings of Sandro Botticelli, and Strange Young Girls, that depicts the childhood friendship between Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas and star of Kubrick’s Lolita, Sue Lyon. These illustrate Abby’s fascination with the tension between external, public pressure and expectation and the knotty interiors of human experience.
In her work, Abby often draws inspiration from across cinema and literature, a passion she developed during her undergraduate studies in English at Durham University. In developing her own distinct voice and meaningful vision, Abby has written, produced and directed work at both Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Camden Fringe under her company, Bossy Boot Productions.
Alongside her theatre work, Abby has experience in television production and development, and is eager to continue expanding her practice into screen.
