Lucy Alder

MA Drama Writing

Biography

Lucy is a playwright and screenwriter from the West Midlands, interested in how storytelling can allow the past to speak to the present (and vice versa).

After graduating from the University of Warwick with a First Class degree in History, Lucy has brought her passion for the subject into her creative work. She believes that we can better understand ourselves and the world we live in by looking at our past. Her writing expands on this idea, particularly focusing on how empire and colonialism have created the climate crisis.

In her spare time, Lucy enjoys being in nature, especially in the water. Before a spinal injury, she was an avid whitewater kayaker and canoe polo player. She feels most alive being outdoors and tries to bring a connection to the natural world into her writing. Lucy is also interested in stories of human endurance and perseverance, having pushed her own limits in extreme sports.

At BOVTS, Lucy has taken the opportunity to explore different writing styles and has enjoyed breaking away from her screenwriting roots. She has also found a love for ensemble theatre and writing for movement.
